1. Entertainment Reporting
There’s entertainment reporting which is what you see on E!(eonline.com)
and Entertainment Tonight (Etonline.com)
Entertainment Tonight is owned by CBS here’s the link to apply to a job with them:
E! Is owned by NBC here’s the link to apply to a job with them:
2. Red Carpet Hosting
Do you like asking interesting questions and socializing with fascinating people? Great! Red carpet hosting might be for you! If you get invited to be a red carpet host there are a few things you might want to consider. You should always dress appropriately for the event, come prepared, don’t get star struck or offended if someone passes on your question. Also, enjoy yourself! You have the chance to gain insight from some influential people. A chance to ask them questions that connect with people who think like you.
3. Press Junkets
Press Junkets cover a variety of mediums but the basic principle is usually the same. It’s an opportunity to promote a product through media outreach. Ever want to have a sit down with actors, directors, authors, and influencers? Your job will most likely involve asking thought-provoking and interesting questions to the people we love to see on screen.
You should try to ask questions that represent the voice of the company you work for and represent.
4. Regional Morning Shows
Regional morning shows can be a great revenue source for someone interested in hosting and broadcasting. I would suggest considering this a long term commitment. Most morning show hosts tend to keep regularly scheduled hours and the atmosphere is usually more casual than evening shows or other career avenues.
5. Industrials
Industrials are another area and can be really wonderful work because usually it's only housed in a company's website. It’s typically you talking about the product or service that that company has to offer. It's good work and pretty good pay.
6. Trade Shows
Trade shows typically run 1-3 days and on average you can make between $1000-1500 a day. Oftentimes you're traveling all over the country, sometimes all over the world. This is live presenting, and that really keeps you on your toes. I always say it's kind of like "the gym" of hosting because your constantly working out your on-camera skills.
7. Shopping Channels
There are also shopping channels, like QVC (QVC.com) and HSN (HSN.com). Usually, those networks pay you 6 figures to start, and it's a full-time job it's reliable income. You are also on-camera talent which is kind of what we all want, right?
8. Infomercials
I also can't go without mentioning infomercials. Infomercials are huge internationally and what a lot of people don't know is that other countries love to hear Americans talk about products. We really represent consumerism to most of the world.
9. Reality TV Shows
Lastly, Reality TV hosting is another area you can work as a host. This can include travel shows as you see on the Travel Channel (travelchannel.com), home makeover shows like Fixer Upper (hgtv.com/shows/fixer-upper).
Conclusion
There are so many options to consider when choosing your on-camera career. I’ve worked in several areas of this industry and enjoyed (Almost) :) every minute of it! I created shannonodowd.com to coach and educate the next generation of on-camera professionals and I've worked with dozens of people and provide them with the necessary skills. I work with people who are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get the results!
